In Loving Memory of Michael Channer
Note from rebecca purver 20 Sept 2004 My deepest sympathies to Mike's family and friends.
I met Mike only briefly this summer in Livingstone, Zambia, where I was doing some charity work. It was an evening in July, at Hippo's, and I was very pleasantly surprised to be introduced to a fellow canadian and especially to someone from the Ottawa region. We had a lovely chat, learning a bit about each other's past travels, recent adventures and future plans. At the time he was planning to work in the DRC. I told him about my interest in international development, he told me how his parents had worked for CIDA and he offered me much encouragement. It was especially comforting to be in the company of someone with whom I could relate as we celebrated our shared canadian'ness' in the middle of a foreign land so far from home. Though our meeting was less than a few hours, I could sense his passion and adventurous spirit, his genuine kindness and warmheartedness. I was deeply saddened to hear of his tragic death and would like to pass on my most heartfelt condolences to his loved ones. rebecca purver ottawa, ontario rebeckyp@yahoo.com
"Good Memories" by Mark H. 19 Sept 2004 As I read all the entries on the site i notice how everyone remembers how quiet and reserved Mike could be.
But As i think back to the times i spent with Mike, I think that i can speak for alot of his friends when i say some of the best times i've ever had, were with Mike when he wasn't being quiet and definately wasn't being reserved.
Mike you were a good friend, a great pilot, and an inspiration to all. I'm sorry to see you go, but thrilled to have known you. Mark H. Kanata,Ont. M_S_hoc@hotmail.com
"Message to Sharon & Gerry from the McKibbin's" by Beth & Tim McKibbin 19 Sept 2004 Dear Sharon & Gerry - we cannot imagine the pain and sorrow you are going through with the tragic loss of Michael. I remember sipping wine over dinner with you and the James' shortly after selling your Herb Garden homestead, and marvelling at the freedom you expressed in travelling (in your VW Van!), and also how proud you were of Michael as a pilot in Africa. Rest assured that Michael has wings of a different nature now. Thank you for sharing this tragedy with all of us.
Sincerely Beth & Tim McKibbin Carp, Ontario timbeth.mckibbin@sympatico.ca
